K-League Format & History

The South Korean K-League 1 is the top tier of professional football in the country. Also known simply as the K-League, the competition sits above the second division, which is known as the K-League 2.

The K-League was created in 1983 and currently has 12 teams playing in the competition. The Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors boast the most league titles with nine triumphs.

The structure of the league sees 12 teams battling for points. The side that finishes the season in 12th is automatically relegated. The side that finishes in 11th plays a relegation play-off against the team that wins the play-offs in the K -League 2.

The competition also has a split system in which each side plays the other teams three times. The top six and bottom six sides are then split into Split A and Split B. The teams in each Split play every other side once to decide which team finishes where.
