New Zealand vs Argentina Tips

New Zealand were left stunned in their opening match at the 2024 Rugby Championship as Argentina ran out 38-30 winners.

Argentina fully deserved the points last week as they made it two wins in their last five meetings with New Zealand.

Head To Head

New Zealand have won seven of their last 10 against Argentina with the Pumas winning the other three including their clash last week.

New Zealand Form

Scott Robertson's 100% winning start to life as New Zealand coach came to a grinding halt last week as he watched his All Blacks side slip to a 38-30 loss to Argentina.

Two wins over England and a victory against Fiji had suggested that the All Blacks were in decent form heading into the Rugby Championship, but they were outplayed and out-thought in their opener. Defeat leaves New Zealand in third in the standings without a point, spared the bottom of the table by their superior points difference to Australia.

The impetus now has to be on winning. Playing well is one thing, but ensuring they are not 10 points short of South Africa at the summit after just two games is vital. The omens are good for the All Blacks though, with their loss to Argentina in 2020 followed by a 38-0 win, while when they lost 25-18 to their opponents in 2022, they followed this up with a 53-3 win.

Argentina Form

Argentina were excellent in their opening match at the Rugby Championship as they took maximum points from their hosts whilst denying them a point of their own.

Victory means they are level with South Africa at the top after the travelling side were able to pounce on some uncharacteristic mistakes from their hosts whilst also utilising some excellent training ground moves from the lineout.

The worry for the away side is that it will be tough to match their intensity from last week. Unfortunately for the Pumas, I predict that they will have to stomach a big loss, although this will not take away from what they did the week before.

Verdict

Having lost by 38 points and 50 points in the follow-up matches to their last two wins over the All Blacks, I am backing Argentina to slip to a heavy defeat as the home side look to bounce back in style.
