Jessica Pegula dropped her first set at the 2024 US Open as she eliminated Karolina Muchova in a 2-1 win. While securing victory was all that mattered, was this first set loss a sign of things to come?

Pegula had championed being one of the few players with an unmarked record at the competition this year, winning each of her first five matches in two sets. Indeed, no player had won more than nine games against her prior to her semi-final outing.

Pegula's record at the US Open is superb, but she has struggled against Sabalenka, winning just two of their seven meetings. Meanwhile, she has lost 11 of her 47 outings in 2024, and I am backing her to slip to defeat in the final.

I am also backing this one to be over in two sets, with the last six meetings between the pair seeing either win 2-0.

Aryna Sabalenka Form

Aryna Sabalenka was the pick of many to win the 2024 US Open, and she has proved those backers right, with a string of exceptional performances seeing her take her place in the final.

Like Pegula, Sabalenka has only dropped one set in her six matches, with this coming against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round. Since then, she has hammered Qinwen Zheng and Emma Navarro, with both players having aspirations of winning the tournament this year.

The ease at which Sabalenka has beaten supposed Slam-contenders shows she is playing at an incredibly high level, likely too high a level for Pegula in the final. While Pegula has impressed, I am backing Sabalenka to secure her third Grand Slam crown.
